Great writing ain’t easy

Here are some cheap and lazy tactics that bad television and movie writers use that irk the shit out of me:

1. Any scene set in the past will invariably be near a car stereo, jukebox, radio or other music playing device. Said device will be playing music of that time period. Wow. Instead of writing a scene that best fits the story, let’s make sure we can have music playing in the background to let everyone know what year it is.

Mistborn

I just put down Mistborn, the latest work by Brandon Sanderson, and have decided to make it my mission to ensure that everyone who visits this site buys a copy of his book. Yeah, I’m talking to you.

Mistborn is Sanderson’s sophmore effort, but it’s as polished as anything I’ve read by writers with decades of experience. Actually, the same is true of his first book, Elantris, but that’s another post (which you can read here, if you like).

I take it back, I’m not sorry at all..

John Karr is innocent. So, I’m no longer sorry for blaming the Ramseys. Well, maybe I am. I think I learned a lesson or something in the debacle, but I’m not sure what it was. So…back to judging people without facts for me! Just kidding. Maybe.

This video, as you may surmise from the above screen, is not safe for work. The girl may not be that hot, and her stage routine could use work, but the last trick alone is worth the price of admission. In fact, if you feel like it, skip ahead to the last minute or so. I won’t mind.
